**UPCOMING ISHINOMAKI PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSIONS**
Saturday, January 16 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm
Friday, January 22 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm.
The Japan America Society of St. Louis has been awarded a grant from the U.S.-Japan Council’s TOMODACHI Initiative to invest in the next generation of Japanese and American people through grassroots level, people-to -people educational exchanges. The 2016 St. Louis/Ishinomaki Friendship Program will take six students (ages 14 to 16 at the time of application) to Ishinomaki for approximately 10-14 days between July 22 to August 5, 2016.
Ishinomaki is a fishing port city, representing authentic traditional Japan. It is one of the areas of the Tohoku most affected by the March 11 Earthquake/Tsunami in 2011. American students will tour the newly reconstructed areas, visit cultural and educational groups, meet with volunteers who have been involved in the long-term reconstruction efforts, experience homestay with Japanese families, and participate in a two-day festival of Ishinomaki, the Kawabiraki (River Opening) Festival, which will celebrate its 93rd anniversary.
Both information sessions will be held in Room 331 SSB (Social Science and Business Building) at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). Applicants and at least one parent are required to attend one of these information meetings. The deadline for application materials is 5 PM, Monday, February 1, 2016. The cost of the 2016 St. Louis-Ishinomaki Friendship Program is $500 per selected finalist/participant. Please click here for the application form and the letter of recommendation form..
Applicant interviews and home visits will be conducted in February, and the finalists chosen in March. Selection preferences will be given to the members of the Japan America Society. Selected participants and families are expected to be involved with the Japan America Society for at least two years, 2016 and 2017. To attend the information meeting, contact the office of Japan America Society of St. Louis at (314) 516-5754 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. We will send you directions to UMSL. We look forward to seeing you!
